Indian Government Scholarships for Studying Abroad



Know about the types of scholarships that are given by the Indian government to its students


We have also observed that many students of good potential find it hard to afford higher education abroad. Thus, to provide Indian students the opportunity to study in better institutions and to motivate them to pursue education overseas, the Indian government has introduced numerous scholarship programs. These programs meet students' basic needs such as accommodation, tuition, and other related expenditures, and are open to everybody regardless of their ancestry, religion, caste, or race.






Scholarships offered by the Indian government 

1. Fulbright-Nehru Master’s Fellowships

The scholarship is awarded to students who want to pursue higher education in the US.

The JN Tata Endowment for the Higher Education of Indians

Launched in 1892, this scholarship can be availed if you have planned to do a PhD or a Post-doctoral program in countries like the USA, Canada, Ireland, etc. The Tata endowment loan scholarship provides a simple interest rate of 2%.

The JN Tata Endowment for the Higher Education of Indians covers

  • Loan scholarships up to 10 lakhs

  • A travel grant amount from INR 50,000 - 7,50,000

Great Scholarships

This scholarship is given to students who want to pursue their studies in the UK. This funds the students who get admission to participating universities or institutions. This scholarship is available in 20 UK universities.

Indian Global Leaders Scholarship

A student who wishes to pursue further studies in Business, Law, or Economics at a university in Queensland can apply for this scholarship.

Business, Economics or Law

Eligibility criteria

  • Students who want to study Business, Economics or Law can avail these scholarships

  • The applicant needs to be an Indian citizen residing in India currently

Indian Global Leaders Scholarship covers

  • Tuition fee from AUD 5,000 to 20,000

  • Access to programs offered by the Student Employability Team

  • Events, presentations, and seminars

National Overseas Scholarship for Scheduled Cast (SC)  Students

This scholarship was introduced to fund the education of students coming from a scheduled caste background. This scholarship program was started by the Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment and helps students study abroad. In this program, 100 scholarships are awarded in a year. A similar kind of scholarship was also launched for students from scheduled tribe backgrounds, but they only have 20 seats. Also, this scholarship can be awarded more than one-time.

  • Family income should not exceed INR 8 lakhs

  • Only two children from the same family are eligible

  • The age limit is 35 years

National Overseas Scholarship covers 

  • Tuition fees of the university

  • Medical insurance premiums required in the international destination

  • Contingency allowance

  • Visa fees 

  • Incidental journey allowance and equipment allowance

  • Annual maintenance allowance


Dr Ambedkar Scheme of Interest Subsidy on Educational Loan for Overseas Studies

This scholarship was introduced for students coming from other backward classes (OBC) or economically backward classes (EBC) who want to pursue higher education abroad.

Eligibility criteria

  • A position secured in an international institution for a master’s, PhD, or MPhil

  • A loan from a bank under the Education Loan Scheme of the Indian Banks Association (IBA)

  • For OBC, the family income should not be more than INR 8 lakhs

  • For EBC, the family income should not be more than INR 2.50 lakhs

  • Students need to provide an income certificate, ITR, Form 16, etc.

Dr Ambedkar's Scheme of Interest Subsidy on Educational Loan for Overseas Studies covers subsidies for the interest payable at the time of studying.
